About Us

The D. L. Dykes, Jr. Foundation is a 501.c.3 operating foundation that works to expand public awareness about progressive issues in religion through seminars, the internet and video programming.

Our Approach

Using a variety of media, the D. L. Dykes, Jr. Foundation invites people to attend public seminars that feature innovative and progressive scholars, authors and lecturers who explore new ways to understand Christianity and to make it a source for addressing social and economic injustice. The foundation produces educational videos that make use of the work of the scholars, authors and lecturers mentioned above and makes them available to churches and individuals for use in adult education classes and small groups.

The foundation also maintains a web site that provides resources for individuals and churches.

Our Mission

The D. L. Dykes, Jr. Foundation seeks to promote critical thinking about traditional Christianity, seeks to encourage people to dignify all life-promoting religions and creeds and seeks to empower people to create social change.

Through its FAITHANDREASON seminars, video productions and web site, the foundation features scholars, authors and teachers who are re-shaping how we see religion, opening up our understanding of our participation in public affairs, challenging us to imagine a better world, and calling us to take action about the social and economic injustices we see in the world.

Our Strategy

The D. L. Dykes, Jr. Foundation uses public seminars held in cities across the south to stimulate critical thinking about religion and its role in society by featuring provocative and progressive scholars, authors and teachers who bring cutting edge thought and work to audiences. Typically, such audiences are made up of people who know they want to move beyond narrow, dogmatic religious belief and attitudes into new understandings that challenge the old, anti-intellectual, anti-science and "anti-world," religion they were once taught.

These are people who, because they are willing to think critically about themselves, their own religion, and their national allegiances, want to be inspired and challenged by a vision of a better world for all people everywhere.
